I heard a rumor his complications were caused by inept surgery but can't find a cite. Anyone?
In the councils of government we must guard against the acquisition of unwarranted influence, whether sought or unsought, by the military-industrial complex. The potential for the disastrous rise of misplaced power exists and will persist.

...Only an alert and knowledgeable citizenry can compel the proper meshing of the huge industrial and military machinery of defense with our peaceful method and goals so that security and liberty may prosper together.
Dwight D. Eisenhower.

No cite, but the discussion on CNN was that he had the surgery, was discharged and had to be re-admitted. Went to ICU and died. Could have been undetected bleeding, infection, an underlying medical problem, but we dont know. The CNN medical correspondent did say a less than 30 day re-admit is usually not good news for the hospital.

My rumor came from a Capitol Hill staffer. Bungled surgery.

May he RIP. He gave much of himself to the service of his country.

Could be. Elizabeth Cohen on CNN eluded to the doctor "possibly nicking an intestine" and a commenter on Kos claimed they read last week there was a post surgical infection (the two are not mutually exclusive of course). Cohen may well have heard the rumors and not been able to confirm, so she stated it that way?

Rep. John Murtha dies at 77
Mr. Murtha was first hospitalized with gallbladder problems in December. He had surgery Jan. 28 at the National Naval Hospital in Bethesda, Md. He went home, but was hospitalized two days later when complications developed. According to a source close to Mr. Murtha -- confirming a report in Politico -- doctors inadvertently cut Mr. Murtha's intestine during the laparoscopic surgery, causing an infection.

What's the bet that there will be a medical inquiry into the surgeon's competence, findings handed down and any penalties applied by whatever body certifies surgeons long before the legal community in California gets off it's ass and deals with America's worst lawyer.
