Right-Wing Youth Group Rallying Against Kagan Today
Evan McMorris-Santoro | July 1, 2010, 9:27AM

Right-wing youth will gather in D.C. at 12:30 today to call on the Senate not to confirm Elena Kagan to the Supreme Court. The event, hosted by the conservative Young Americans for Freedom, will include speeches by leaders from the libertarian CATO Institute, the Heritage Foundation and the tea party movement.

The event, coming four days into the Kagan hearings and after the end of Kagan's public testimony before Congress, is the first organized demonstration for or against Kagan this week. So far, the hearings have been relatively controversy-free (outside the hearing room that is), with only Capitol Hill mainstay Randall Terry and his followers showing up each day to attack Kagan over abortion rights.

Today's protest also includes talk of abortion, but will focus on other conservative attacks on Kagan as well.

"Our generation cannot afford to be denied job opportunities and the ability to patriotically serve our country because Kagan poorly judged the value of military service," YAF executive director Jordan Fabian said in a statement. "Our generation cannot afford to to have Kagan on the bench for the next forty years because Kagan's awful judgment to favor Socialism over freedom."

According to this article, young conservatives across the country who cannot attend will be calling their U.S. Senators during their lunch break to encourage them to keep out Kagan.

Where are those who support Kagan? I think I'm going to make some phone calls today to support Kagan. ;)

Susan Collins Becomes Third GOP Senator To Announce Support For Elena Kagan
JULIE HIRSCHFELD DAVIS | 07/23/10 03:58 PM | AP

WASHINGTON — Republican Senator Susan Collins said Friday that she would vote to confirm Elena Kagan as a Supreme Court justice, breaking with her party to back President Barack Obama's nominee.

Collins announcement made her the third GOP senator to support Obama's choice to succeed retired Justice John Paul Stevens. It doesn't alter the positive outlook for Kagan in the Senate, where she was already well on track to be confirmed in early August by majority Democrats and a handful of Republican moderates.

The Maine lawmaker said in a statement that Kagan has "the intellect, experience, temperament and integrity" to serve honorably on the high court.

"To be clear, in her previous posts, Ms. Kagan has taken positions that I oppose," including on gun rights, Collins said of the Obama administration's solicitor general, who previously served as a Clinton administration aide and as dean of Harvard Law School.

Olympia Snowe joins Lindsey Graham, Richard Lugar and Susan Collins.

From Huffington Post:

WASHINGTON — Republican Sen. Olympia Snowe says she plans to vote to confirm Elena Kagan as a Supreme Court justice.

The Maine lawmaker's announcement makes her the fourth Republican to break with her party to back President Barack Obama's high court nominee.

In a statement, Snowe says Kagan has met her standards for a justice with her strong intellect, respect for the rule of law and understanding of the Supreme Court's important but limited role.

She also says endorsements from conservative lawyers show that Kagan has a reputation for a sound judicial temperament.

From WND (via Taitz*): Papers prepped to disbar Elena Kagan
WND wrote:Larry Klayman, founder of Judicial Watch and Freedom Watch USA, is bringing the complaint, alleging Kagan altered an official scientific report used as evidence by the Supreme Court to persuade the justices to overturn bans on partial-birth abortion.

As WND reported, dozens of pro-life organizations are already asking the Senate to investigate Kagan's 1997 amendment to an American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists report, which was then used by the Supreme Court as justification for overturning Nebraska's partial-birth abortion ban in 2000.

The non-crazy take.

Judd Gregg Backs Elena Kagan, Fifth Republican To Do So
JULIE HIRSCHFELD DAVIS | 07/30/10 04:27 PM | AP

WASHINGTON — Republican Sen. Judd Gregg says he plans to vote to confirm Elena Kagan as a Supreme Court justice.

The retiring senator from New Hampshire says Kagan is qualified to serve on the high court, although she may have a different political philosophy than he does.

Gregg's announcement in a statement Friday makes him the fifth Republican to break with his party and back President Barack Obama's nominee. He says confirmation should be based on qualifications, not ideological litmus tests or political affiliation.

From AGJ

Kagan Lies to Supreme Court - Charges Filed
August 4th, 2010

COMPLAINT FILED AGAINST KAGAN AT SUPREME COURT

(Washington, DC). Larry Klayman, the founder of Judicial Watch and now Freedom Watch public interest law groups, today filed a complaint before the U.S. Supreme Court, asking that the high court disbar Elena Kagan.

Kagan, while she was an Associate White House Counsel in the Clinton administration, falsified an expert medical report, prepared by the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG). In this report, ACOG had originally found that partial birth abortion was in fact not medically necessary to save the life of a woman, but Kagan changed the report’s finding to say that it was an appropriate procedure under some circumstances. This report was then relied upon by the U.S. Supreme Court in striking down legislation banning partial birth abortion.

[snip]

The rules of legal ethics require her disbarment and I intend to pursue it, to set an example that prospective and sitting judges, or anyone in the legal profession or otherwise, are not above the law.”

Klayman represents the Declaration Alliance, a national non-partisan advocacy and social welfare organization. The details of Ms. Kagan’s misconduct can be found in a report prepared by the Americans United for Life Action, see http://www.aul.org/featured-images/Kagan-Ethics-Report.pdf

Old news. However, as far as I can tell, one can be disbarred and still be a Justice on the Supreme Court.

It's a done deal...

I know the rant is old news, but according to the article the "complaint" was filed or forwarded, or whatever language they used, to SCOTUS today.

The problem is that the complaint itself (if represented correctly here) is a lie.

Kagan "falsified" nothing. She suggested a change in wording in the ACOG report to the ACOG, and they themselves concurred and made the change.

The report was relied on by the Supreme Court... but it was the official ACOG report, not some falsified-by-Kagan version.

I'm certainly not arguing that point, and feel the complaint is total BS and an attempt at a political hit job...just reporting what was posted elsewhere by the RWNJs.

That is my understanding as well. Too bad she will not ask the court for sanctions against these clowns for filing a false and frivolous law suit in federal court.

I've got C-SPAN2 on, waiting on the vote over Kagan's nomination.

The GOP apparently has unlimited time, and is involved in some kind of strange circle jerk theater between John Ensign, Jeff Sessions, John Thune, and Roger Wicker. It's obviously scripted, each of them asking each other things about Elena.

Kinda reminds me of a late night infomercial, but disgusting.

Jeff Sessions' whole raison d'être it seems to me, is based on revenge for being deemed unqualified to be a federal judge. Of course it's scripted. Pffft. Alabama.
In the councils of government we must guard against the acquisition of unwarranted influence, whether sought or unsought, by the military-industrial complex. The potential for the disastrous rise of misplaced power exists and will persist.

Thanks, realist. I note that her numbers are lower than Sonia Sotomayor's. The vote for her was 68-31.

Yep. In addition to that %^#%$@ turncoat Ben Nelson, it looks like Kagan didn't get the votes of Lamar Alexander, Chris Bond, Mel Martinez, Judd Gregg and George Voinovich, all of whom voted for Sotomayor.

One "rationale" spouted by this group was "lack of experience as a judge". That's pure hypocrisy, of course, since some of those in the list are on the record as having favored broadening the court to include Justices who weren't career judges. Oh well, it's still a healthy bipartisan vote.

Edit: Whoops! Strike Judd Gregg from the list above. H/T to June Bug!
